Bringing extra support to the lunchroom
How can cafeteria staff build positive relationships with kids? Lunchroom monitors and food service workers found out at Healthi Kids' Nov. 6 training. Staff from 15 schools practiced creating a safe, supportive and fun cafeteria environment. They also learned to help students dealing with trauma. Wegmans staff showed how to make lunch service more customer oriented. Workshop partners were Playworks, the Rochester City School District, the Children's Institute and the Society for the Protection and Care of Children. Take action on immigration proposal
A proposed federal rule could hurt children's health.
For decades, immigrants have been judged on how likely they are to depend on public cash assistance. If so, they can be denied entry or lawful permanent resident status. Officials look at Social Security Income, temporary cash aid and emergency Medicaid for long-term care. A new proposal would expand the list of assistance programs to include some health care, nutrition and housing assistance.
No family should have to choose between staying in this country legally and accessing healthy foods, stable housing and health insurance. Film captured makeover
More than 100 people attended the Little Theatre debut Nov. 14 of Rochester Street Films: Complete Streets Edition. The film showed a redesign of Parsells Avenue and Greeley Street to slow traffic. Resident Veronica Richardson-Hall said the Parsells-Greeley project brought neighbors together.
At the film, architecture firm Stantec showed possible designs for two other challenging intersections. The intersections are: Lake Avenue/Phelps Avenue and Monroe Avenue/Dartmouth Street/Canterbury Road.

On the Road

Stephanie David, children's health policy associate, traveled to Albany to hear two national experts on infant and early childhood mental health. The New York State Council on Children and Families organized the meeting. Now a member of the New York State Association for Infant Mental Health, Healthi Kids will continue to explore the issue.
