June 2, 2023
Date: Saturday, June 10, 2023
Time: 12:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Place: Intersection of Arnett Blvd & Warwick Ave (310 Arnett Blvd, Rochester, NY 14619)
Families and residents of the 19th Ward neighborhood, and a team of community partners* will join together on Saturday, June 10 to transform the intersection of Arnett Boulevard and Warwick Avenue as part of the Complete Streets Makeover project. Saturday will be a fun day for community involvement, complete with music and food, as volunteers work alongside street architects to paint the pavement and install temporary traffic calming features.
The neighborhood community has been actively involved in reimagining the space to slow down traffic and make this vibrant neighborhood hub safer for everyone. The ideas that will be implemented were developed with input gathered at a community workshop held at the Arnett Library in February. The Arnett Branch Library, the Arnett Block Association, The Arnett Cafe, and His Branches Community Health Center have been valued partners on the project.
Design elements to calm traffic and improve safety will include: enhanced signage, curb extensions, a parklet area, playful sidewalk art, and a street mural designed by local artist Richmond Futch Jr. The temporary installation design was created by Stantec, which donates pro bono professional engineering services for the project. Other elements to beautify the space, like flower planters and a “wishing tree”, will be done with help from kids in the neighborhood.
A goal of the Complete Streets Makeover program is to bring attention to complete streets design as one critical factor in creating streets that are safe for everyone. Complete streets allow everyone—regardless of age, ability or mode of transportation—to safely share, access and move through our community streets.
Speed data will be collected as evidence of the project’s impact, and program partners will provide ongoing support to the neighborhood to advocate for making the improvements permanent.
This project is supported with funding provided by ESL Charitable Foundation, The Community Foundation, Genesee Transportation Council, and New York State Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities initiative.
